Malware and Virus Removal

Malware is an abbreviation for malicious software. According to Google, malware is: “software that is intended to damage or disable computers and computer systems.” This is typically done without the knowledge of the computer or computer owner/operator. Some of the different malware are:
  • Viruses
  • Worms
  • Spyware
  • Key loggers
  • Any other malicious code that gains access to a computer.

Malware is usually considered based on the creator’s intent not so much from its actual features. Internet criminals are the biggest driving force for malware creation. The amount of money that can be made is the driving force for the increase in volume. Originally, malware was created for tests and mischief, however this led to the damage and destruction of the receiving computers.

Today, many malware programs are written for profit through various avenues:
  • Spyware: stealing sensitive information
  • Spam: sending mass unwanted emails
  • Adware: forced advertising
  • Ransomware: money extortion

Many factors can cause computers to be susceptible to malware attacks:
  • Operating system design flaws
  • Computers on same grid running the same operating system
  • Too much access given to users
  • Just running windows (since it is most popular – most malware get written for it)

Best practices on how to protect your computer:
  • Set up and maintain a high quality antivirus package
  • Do not open email attachments from people you don’t know
  • Even if you know the sender and it looks suspicious, confirm from the sender that they sent it to you.
  • Stay away from websites that appear to be suspicious
  • Be vigilant when browsing the internet
